Methadone has literally saved my life. If I had not come to the point in my morphine and heroin addiction where I decided that I did not want to live like I was anymore I would definetly be in prison right now or probably even dead. I would never have known that I could have been free from my own personal living hell. I lost everything due to my addiction, my car, my house, my family, my friends but most of all my dignity, my self worth and the all of the belief in myself, I truly saw no way out of my addiction, I pretty much lost everything that once meant so much to me. I did things I am completely ashamed of just so I could have that heroin or morphine in my vein, its embaressing but it is true. I have been clean and going to the methadone clinic for exactly 1 year and 1 month now. I have never felt so free and alive, I now know that I can live my life the way I am supposed to live it, I am currently in the process of applying to go back to college. I have mended my relationship with my family, and most of my friends and it might sound cheesy but with myself. There is no doubt in my mind that going to the methadone clinic has saved my life!! I truly credit my life to my methadone treatment and my counselors and the support of my family. I know that I have screwed up terribly in the past but methadone has given me a new lease on life and I now know that I will be able to do everything I put my heart and soul into. Thank you methadone for saving my life and allowing me to see the world through clear eyes. I would recommend methadone to anyone with an addiction to heroin or morphine, but I do know that no one person can save another person, it takes the person with the addiction to decide that they need to save themselves.

Methadone is a killer. I know sooo many people who have died off of it and who have O.D. off of it. My good friend Boone died off of it, my mom's ex boyfriend Brad O.D. off of it, three kids who bought it from some lady all died off of it in one night, my friend Sam's cousin died off of it, and my ex boyfriend Jimmy O.D. off of it. Thats a lot of people that I just know. Imagine how many have died off of it around the world. So if you're perscribed it, please dont sell it cause you would never be able to live with yourself if someone died because of something you gave them. Or at least I hope you would feel that would because you should. I think if you are really addicted to heroin or morphine or whatever, then you should take it, and for god sake's done mix it with anything. But otherwise, dont try methadone. Chances are you will probaly die. I'm just writing all of this to warn people and hopefully stop a few people from trying it. Its stupid. Thats all I have to say.

Methadone is NOT a killer drug. It is like any other. It is a prescription medication. If you are taking it "as prescribed" by a physician, and are being followed up by the doc all should go well. If you abuse your prescription, or pick it up on the street, then it is like all the rest..Yes it can kill, but then so can an overdose of Tylenol. It's your life, you suffer the consequences of your actions..and yes, DEATH is a consequence.

Of course Methadone can kill!! Just like alchohol, or any other addictive substance, Methadone can kill any one when it's not being used in a proper/mature manner.

In fact, this is true for any drug, addictive or not! Any person can die from any drug, even if that person is following an instruction procedure in a mature/responsible manner. That much is obvious!

However, when some people say that drugs like Methadone should be removed and illegal due to it causing numerous deaths... that is and would most certainly be the wrong move! Honestly, banning what is often a literal life-saver not only lacks common sense, even more, it is pure ignorance and idiotic.

You can't let a few (in comparison) "bad apples" ruin the bunch. If Methadone were to be taken away from everyone who's using it simply because of missuse and or the death of various people, we would have a lot of people go without the help they need to legitimately treat their health conditions/problems.

In fact, ironically enough, if Methadone was suddenly denied to everyone taking it, and if it was taken away from people currently using it for legit health reasons (i.e. severe chronic back pain), the actual withdrawl symptoms caused by immediately discontinuing the drug would either cause serious harm to people, or it would literally end a persons life with existing health conditions.

There are always side-effects with drugs, or rather throughout life. There is a good and bad side of everything... that which is heavily considered when first perscribing a drug like Methadone to a patient. Meaning, do the risks outweigh the benefits?

With me and numerous back problems, the risks are worth it. If the FDA discontinued every drug known to haave deadly side-effects, there wouldn't be any drugs left to use and help those with health (mental & physical) problems.

I should suggest a few key points to any one who wishes to look into and learn about Methadone.

When reading about a negative side effect assosciated with or caused by Methadone, try to purposely locate an example wherein the positive effects/stories of/regarding Methadone are discussed.

I guarantee you or anyone else reading this... and I don't have any factual data or any other kind of proof to make this claim...

Methadone, in my personal experience & opinion, saves many, MANY more lives than it takes! :)

I was wondering if someone could help me find an answer.

This woman gave her prescription of methadone to another person and he died. She denied him emergency help and watched him die then called 911. They are not holding her responsible for his death. She admitted she gave him a few pills then changed her story later stating he stole her medicine which is a flat out lie. Another person was there in the home too and she too, did not call 911. Shouldn't they both be held accountable. I am trying to find some Michigan laws on this but not seeing too much of anything. He was in distress and they did nothing to help him!!

Thanks, BJ...it's always good to have a "healthy fear". However, can't tell you strongly enough that people do NOT die if they are taking their medication as prescribed. The people that have died have mixed other drugs with it or taken more than prescribed. It's the same with any strong narcotic...a little common sense goes a long way.

Many people HAVE died from taking methadone exactly according to their doctor's prescription of it. If you do the research you will find that this is true. Methadone is much more dangerous than other narcotic types of pain killers because it stays in your system much much longer than others - and long after the pain relieving effects wear off. It is very easy to OD on it.

My mother died at the age of 49 from a methadone overdose. We, her family, did not know she was taking it until we got the autopsy report. We found out later that she recieved it from a woman at work for her back pain. This woman apparently had liquid methadone and free poured some in my mother's drink. I believe she probably did this a couple days in a row and it built up in my mom's system and then she just didn't wake up one morning. My dad and sister found her dead in bed and called 911 who tried to make them do CPR but she already had rigormortis and was cold, had been dead about 6 hours.

She had 3 daughters and 3 grandkids, she was very close to my 4 year old son they were best buddies. He still talks about how much he misses "Grandma Pebbles" as he called her, and he is almost 7.

I will be the first to admit that it is mainly my mother's fault that she died. To let someone free pour methadone in your drink is just plain stupid in my book. But I am an RN and I know how dangerous drugs can be. Maybe lay-people don't realize this as much? I don't know. But I still think it is common sense to not take un-measured amounts of methadone!

However, I also think it is the fault of the person handing out the methadone. Another healthy person at my mother's work died overnight for no apparent reason 2 weeks prior to my mother's death. Maybe a coincidence maybe not.

The danger I believe is in giving prescriptions of a drug that can EASILY kill (much more easily than other narcotic pain killers, oxycontin, lortab, percocet, etc.) to people who are uneducated/have no common sense - whatever you want to call it - who pass it out to their friends. THIS is extremely dangerous! But how does a doctor determine if someone is "responsible" enough to get this prescription? Obviously that is an ethical question that is impossible to answer.

Methadone IS a killer and I think people should know it because then perhaps they would be less apt to pass it out to their friends or loved ones. Many many people have died this way and it is tragic and so sad for the loved ones left behind. It is a death that gives no warning. You can't say goodbye - they are here one minute and gone the next. And usually you have to wait another 10 weeks for the autopsy report to even find out why they died.

I think if the proper education including candid information about the drug's dangers - statistics of people who have died from it, how they died - should be given to people who recieve prescriptions for methadone. Is this ethical? I think so! Would we give people licenses to have guns without the proper education??

I understand taking methadone is worth it to some people who are getting off heroine or with chronic pain - but at least they would be properly educated as to what they were putting in their body and less likely to share with other people.

Is methadone a lifelong drug? Like antidepressants often are... or insulin...?
